I’ll let you in on a little secret. The gym isn’t the be all or end all of improving your fitness. Shocker I know. There are many ways to workout which don’t involve sweating in a room full of strangers, queuing for the shower or forgetting to pack your leggings. As long as you have the motivation to workout and are open-minded to try new things, you’ll succeed in getting the results you want.
Whether you are a complete beginner, short on space or don’t have a clue where to start, here’s the best ways to workout if you hate the gym.
Try workouts at home
If the thought of having grunting gym goers in your ear makes you quiver then working out at home is your sanctuary. Other perks include choosing your own music, wearing whatever you want and not having to queue for a shower. Winner! One of my favourite home workouts is FIIT, an online platform that brings together the best of fitness boutiques to the comfort of your own home. From HIIT to Yoga, there’s a variety of trainers and classes you can interact and workout with. Try FIIT for free here.
Find a class that suits you
When I first got into fitness I avoided going to the gym because I didn’t have a clue where to start. It wasn’t until I took part some fitness classes that I learnt how to do different exercises properly and from there put together a workout. Take part in local classes to understand different exercises; circuit training, HIIT, functional training and body pump are a few to name.
Bring a buddy
Talk about strengths in numbers, having someone there can help boost confidence and performance. If you are lacking motivation or confidence in working out, confide in a friend, pencil a workout in and make a date of it. Having that extra support whilst working out can make a huge difference to your confidence and ability to keep consistent. Catch up whilst breaking a sweat, best of both worlds.
Do something you love
Gone are the days of slogging it out on a treadmill or forcing yourself through a workout you hate. Even if it’s going for long walks, dancing around the house or taking up a sport, when you find something you love doing, it won’t seem like a chore. Exercise can and should be fun, and it doesn’t have to be so serious. So if taking time each day to jam out in your bedroom makes you happy, bust the moves!
Make fitter choices
Not every workout has to be super intense. You can make fitter choices throughout your day that can contribute to a healthy lifestyle. Next time you are faced with the escalator or stairs, increase those steps. Hop off one tube stop before yours and walk instead. Park the furthest away from the store and see if you can carry your bags back to your vehicle. Invest in a standing desk or make the effort to get out on your lunch break to gain more steps. It doesn’t have to be extreme, the small changes can work efficiently together to improve your fitness.
You don’t need a gym membership to be fit. Sure, it’s a great element but it’s not for everyone and hopefully with these ways you are able to think outside the box for your workouts.
